At approx 8:20 pm a bright large speck of light, larger than a star but closer, appeared and moved quickly in a straight line before disappearing from the sky. I thought it was a shooting star at first, but it completely disappeared at once, and it was much higher in the sky than any New Years fireworks.

What you described sounds very much like an "iridium flare". I trust if you were familiar with iridium flares you probably would not have made this report. Research iridium flares and let me know what you think.
