During the Summer of 1997 at around 11pm in Smithfield, VA I saw an orange orb slowly move in my direction from beyond some trees across a field, then stopped and hovered/paused in one spot for a several minutes. It hovered a few hundred feet above the ground, then moved back in the direction it came from and disappeared beyond the trees. At first, I thought it was an airplane, but when it got closer, I realized it was not flashing, was silent, and was a big solid orange orb. It was close enough to be bigger than the moon in the sky. It was somewhere between 500 and 1,000 feet away. The were no clouds and I believe I remember it being a full moon. The sky was bright from the moonlight. I stood there and watched it until it disappeared. The entire experience lasted about 5-10 minutes.
